This is the passage my written exam focused on:
«Gregoris v.3101-36»
Der arme Grêgôrius,
nû beleip er alsus
ûf dem wilden steine
aller gnâden eine.
er enhete andern gemach,
niuwan der himel was sîn dach.
er enhete deheinen scherm mê
vür rîfen noch vür snê,
vür wint noch vür regen
niuwan den gotes segen.

der im daz leben vriste,

wan gote ist niht unmügelich
ze tuonne swaz er wil,
im ist deheines wunders ze vil.
Hartmann von Aue.
Pretty manageable, no? Especially given the fact that my topic was "Places and spaces of salvation in Hartmanns Gregorius". This is the passage in which Gregorius has arrived on the rocky island he spends his seventeen-year self-appointed exile as a penance for the double incest he was a result and part of - before he is chosen as pope - it is the ultimate place of salvation in the poem and thus a glaringly obvious and kind choice. I'm expecting that others had similar "kind" choices - he's your examiner, as well, isn't he, [livejournal.com profile] lordhellebore ? So, don't be worried.

Not sure what good that choice has done me, though, because as always, my exam is a huge, big blank in my memory.

Well, who is the "he" you are speaking of? Prof H? He'll be my examiner.

Eeep, yes, I forgot to say - Prof F. I thought you wanted to ask him after all, sorry, must have gotten that wrong.

Well, yes, he did, and his official list was, but he still kept taking on people he knew and like. I thought I'd be the last person on his list because I'm taking so long, but it turns out that there are several others, and there's even a prep course for his examinees on Fridays now - inofficially, but it's there. I wasn't sure, and I remember you saying that you were thinking about asking him and that you didn't like H., so it'd have made sense.

Why the sad default icon? *offers hugs*

Oh, he does??? *frets* I still owe him three effing papers, I never turned one in. But I need to finish them all this summer anyway. I just might ask him after getting them back. Who knows... I despise prof H, and that's not an exaggeration. I really don't want to have him!

It's not sad, it's pretty ^^

Ah, good, I was thinking - what with all the stuff going on, might have been sad. It IS pretty, though. <3

I'd definitely do that if I were you - even if he does say no, it can't hurt to ask! Oh, also, you might think about coming along to the Lübeck excursion on 21.3 - you could bring Hannah, I'm sure nobody would mind, and he's got grandchildren her age.

Prof H. is a difficult case. He is usually very forbidding and stern in the beginning, but becomes positively charming once he's seen that you're not an idiot. I used to be scared of him, but after I handed in my first paper, he became positively charming - stopping in the hallways to ask how I was, greeting me whenever he saw me, stopping to chat, the works. It was quite the transformation.

I won't write a paper for prof H. Not after he treated me like a moron when he wanted to discuss the paper I was supposed to write. Yeah, I have no idea how to work scientifically, never mind I wrote a 40 pages research paper on an 18th century manuscript and got a bloody A! Tsk.

What excursion? And do you think he'd allow that? I'm not in any of his classes right now.

D= Wow, that sounds special even for him. But he is known to be like that during his office hours, too. He treated me like a moron when I first came to see him to ask whether it was possible to hand in my paper early at all - before I had even started writing my paper. He started asking me about the methods I would use for writing my paper (I didn't even have a topic yet! D=) and when I mumbled about the very first steps I'd take, he said rather severely that that wouldn't do at all for a paper (gee, really?).

His expectations for oral presentations are crazy high, too. The only presentations he was fine with in the class I attended were those based on papers that students had already written. I was rather glad I was the last one to hold my presentation, otherwise I wouldn't have know that.

It's Prof F. I brought along my brother last time and he didn't bat an eye, yes of course he'll be fine. I heard via the grapevine that there'll be an excursion (his last! D =) on March, 21st, starting at around ten. I was going to e-mail him about it on the weekend, I'll let you know what he says. :)

Well, at least Prof H has to take everyone who asks him to be their examiner - because he is the only official one.

Yes, please tell me. I could e-mail him about how I heard it was the last and I never had the chance of coming, and now I'd love to come ;)

He does. And from what I've heard, he's a good examiner, because though he expects a LOT, he tells his students exactly what it is he expects, which makes preparation easier.

I'll pass on what I find out. :)
